The transformation of work and energy takes centre stage at Labour Unions event
Networks, skills and production supply chains will be decisive in accompanying the energy transition and turning it into an opportunity for economic and social development. This was one of the themes that emerged on 29 September in Milan during a day of discussion organised as part of the celebrations marking the 120th anniversary of CGIL, dedicated to the transformation of work and the major challenges of the present.
The event brought together experts, international trade union representatives and leading voices from the world of work. Among them was Vincenzo Ranieri, CEO of E-Distribuzione, an Enel Group company and Italy’s leading operator in electricity distribution and metering, who took part in the panel discussion on energy and transition.

At the centre of the debate was the role of networks and their ability to accompany and anticipate change. According to Ranieri, “the pace of the transition will be determined by networks, production supply chains and the workforce.” From this perspective, infrastructure, innovation and skills become closely connected: the investments needed to make networks more modern and resilient must be accompanied by the training of a qualified workforce, capable of supporting the transformation of the energy system and turning it into a driver of economic and social development.
This link between transformation and work also runs through CGIL’s history. When the Confederation was founded in 1906, its priority was to bring together workers from different trades, territories and conditions. One hundred and twenty years later, a changing world poses new challenges and requires new tools to connect development, work and sustainability. These challenges shaped the panels and discussions held during the 29 September event.

The celebrations continued on 30 September at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, with an event dedicated to the collective memory of CGIL’s 120-year history through art and theatre.
