Kenya to Host Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting

A meeting that provides the opportunity for cabinet ministers, senior officials, civil society, private sector and partner agencies to discuss critical issues in advancing gender equity and women’s empowerment, is expected to be held in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, September 19 – 20, 2019.

The 12th Commonwealth Women’s Affairs Ministers Meeting (WAMM), says Commonwealth, that projects itself as a voluntary association of 53 countries and home to 2.4 billion citizens, “is returning to Nairobi where the first meeting was held in 1985. The meeting will focus on the Commonwealth’s four priorities for gender equality and women’s empowerment: women in leadership; women’s economic empowerment; ending violence against women and girls; and gender and climate change.”

The organisers of the two-day that is expected to bring together ministers for gender and women’s affairs to review and appraise the progress towards achieving the Commonwealth’s four priorities on gender equity and other related national and regional commitments, shall be convened by Patricia Scotland, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.
WAMM is described as “an opportunity to transform global commitments, words and aspirations expressed by leaders into concrete action towards accelerating gender equality for sustainable development.”
